Milan Mirror-Exchange, Milan, Gibson Co, TN - Nov 29, 1989 Harry Pipkin: Legacy of Leadership Harry Wilson Pipkin, 96 of Nashville, formerly of Yorkville, retired regional manager for the Franklin Life Insurance Co., where he received a 45 year award of service, died Thursday at Vanderbuilt University Hospital in Nashville. Services were Saturday November 25 at Roesch-Patton Funeral Home in Nashville with burial in Yorkville Cemetery. Mr. Pipkin, a legend to Milan area citizens who knew him, was buried Saturday afternoon on a rolling hill within sight of his nephew's home, former Congressman Ed Jones. Jones was asked to preach the sermon at the graveside services by declined, "I couldn't do it because he was too close to me," Jones said. "Uncle Harry played a role in shaping lots of peoples lives - including mine." His grandson gave the eulogy. Noted for his strong beliefs, wits and wisdom, Mr. Pipkin was outspoken in those things he believed in and became a very successful executive. Years ago he erected a giant headstone in the Yorkville Cemetery that is one of the most unique in the county. A World War I veteran, he was a former teacher and principle in the Gibsonville County Schol System, was postmaster at Yorkville, and a former employee of the U.S. Treasury Dept. He was a member of the founders board of David Lipscomb Univ., the president's club of the University of Tennessee, Harpeth Hills Church of Christ and founder of the Yorkville Chapter of the American Legion. Mr. Pipkin, the widower of Mary McCorkle Pope Pipkin, leaves four daughters; Mrs. Carolyn Norman of Gatlinburg, Mrs. Rosemary Jackson of Pittsburg, PA, Mrs. Glenda Whitaker of Nashville and Mrs. Lyndell Thompson of Franklin; a son, Harry Wilson, Jr. of Knoxville, 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. (Comment: Our condolences to the family. Harry Wilson Pipkin was born 3 Feb 1893 in Yorkville, TN, the son of Francis Marion and Sibbie Johanna Wilson Pipkin. The large cemetery marker referenced above was constructed many years ago. It includes the family genealogy of Harry and Mary "Mack" on the front and the family tree on the other side. Pictures of the monument show it to be probably 5 to 6 feet in height and 10 to 12 feet in length. He was a charter member of the Pipkin Family Association which began in 1963. Thanks to Joel C.
