Virgil A. Pipkin - 12 Apr 1983 Services for Virgil A. Pipkin, 95, of Fresno will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Palm Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Smith Mountain Cemetery in Dinuba. Mr. Pipkin died Monday. He was born in Arkansas and moved to Dinuba in 1911 and Fresno in 1925. He was a self-employed barber 47 years. He had been motel owner and rancher. Mr. Pipkin was a longtime Democrat. In 1981, House Speaker Tip O'Neill called Mr. Pipkin to thank him for a $25 contribution to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's direct-mail fund drive over the $2 million mark. At that time, Mr. Pipkin said in a Bee article that he has fought with Republicans for as long as he could remember and sends money to Democrats all over the nation. "I only had to apoligize once for my voting," Mr. Pipkin said. "A couple of two-faced guys got a hold of me and convinced me to vote for Herbert Hoover. That was a mistake." When Ronald Reagan was governor, Mr. Pipkin led a recall move against him in Fresno County. Mr. Pipkin had been a member of Peoples Church and the Fresno Full Gospel Businessmens Fellowship. In 1958, Mr. Pipkin left for Japan to do missionary work for the Assemblies of God Church and the Far East Broadcasting Co. Surviving are two sons, Paul and Silas, both of Fresno; four daughters, Shirley Titus of Fresno, Marjorie Balch and LaFonda Balch, both of Fremont, and Bernice Hancock of Idaho; a brother, Del of Modesto; 21 grandchildren; and 22 great- grandchildren.
