This photo ran in the papers as "Many at Funeral of Lewis Pipkin": Hundreds of Springfieldians mourn the death of Lewis F. Pipkin, assistant county clerk and member of one of Springfield's oldest and outstanding families, whose funeral was at St. Paul's church Monday. Mr. Pipkin died of an infection which developed so suddenly that even most of his friends knew not of it until they heard the shocking news of his death. Lewis Felix Pipkin, son of William Harvey and Christena (Hoover) Pipkin. Pipkin was born in Fair Grove, Missouri, in 1861 and for several years he operated a book store on Commercial Street in Springfield. He later became connected as secretary and treasurer with the Springfield Grocery Company and was prominent in Springfield business community for his civic involvement and employment at Mc Daniel Bank. Pipkin, a member of many social organizations, held public office as assistant city clerk and city collector for 12 years. He was also president of the school board. He died unexpectedly from an infection or influenza, and local leaders at his death said that he was being considered for mayor when the present mayor's term expired. His wife was Lillie Murray, daughter of Col. L. H. Murray, pioneer banker and newspaper owner.
