Horace Earl Pipkin, President of Pipkin Family Association, Dies Horace Earl Pipkin, 88, died 31 Dec 1989 at Mesa, AZ. He was born 25 Nov 1901 at Oleo, NM the son of James Knox Polk Jr. and Phoebe Owens Pipkin. His mother died when he was four years old and his father remarried to Clara Marzlin. Horace Earl married Alta Whitney, the daughter of Job Hall and Georgianna Mitchell Whitney at Aztec, NM on 2 Oct 1922. He was a carpenter and brickmason. He was a self-employed masonry contractor for 37 years. He was a member of the Mesa Sixth Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. During his life time, he served on several stake missions, and worked for eight years in the Southwest Indian Mission on the Navajo Reservation. The family lived at Mesa, AZ; Farmington, NM and St. George, UT. Horace Earl was a zealous researcher of Pipkin family genealogy and was a name known to many researchers over the years. He was the first President of the Pipkin Family association in 1963 and was elected again about 8 years ago. His funeral services were conducted at the Mesa 6th Ward Chapel, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Mesa, AZ. Casket bearers at his funeral were his sons, Richard and James; son-in-law Ralph Shelly; and grandson-in-law John Helquist, Don Kerstetter and Joe Jolley. Family participants at the ceremonies included: Family Prayers by son-in-law Laurence Jones, Devotion by son James; Life Sketch by son-in-law Norman Tanner; Benediction by son Richard and Dedication of the Grave by son-in-law John Amadio. His great granddaughter Shari Stokes wrote the poem "Grandpa" that was printed in the Memorial Service Folder. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Alta of Mesa, two sons: Richard of Ogden, UT and James of Orem, UT; six daughters: Evelyn Tanner of Central, Gwen Shelley and Joyce Carlisle both of Mesa, Ellen Jones of Santa Clara, UT, Retha Amadio of Independence, MO and Sharon Laurence of Chandler Heights; a brother Levi of CA; 29 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and two great grand children.
