Sam Pipkin (1892-1972) In the Memphis, Tennessee "Commercial Appeal", on October 12, 1972, appeared the obituary of Sam Pipkin, 80, of 1482 Court, Memphis, a retired cotton gin superintendent. Mr. Pipkin, according to the obituary, was born in Toone (Hardeman County), Tennessee, and had lived in Grenada, Mississippi, prior to coming to Memphis about thirty years ago (in about 1942). He left his wife, Mrs. Elgin Pipkin; a son, Sidney Pipkin of Tupelo, Mississippi; a daughter, Mrs. Leo Brody of Memphis, nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was buried in Grenada, Mississippi. If the locations of this early Pipkins in Tennessee is any indication, my guess would be that Sam Pipkin was a descendant of Lewis and Clemency Hughes Pipkin.
